Light is dodging the misfortune as of yet due to his intellect, social bonds, and an exponentially degrading concience.
An old quote from earlier in the series, back before L “died” was something along the lines of “Those with the power to kill are not evil, the power to kill is evil.”
Right now Light is cursed, every day he stays free and with access to the death note is a day that the evil of the note consumes him more.
Another quote I’d like to put out there is “Absolute power corrupts absolutelly.” And light is aiming toward being god, having absolute power. When you have as much power as Light, its hard to view other people as anything else but cattle ready to be herded.

L was ok, I personally think Light is way better and more interesting. I really felt it when L died tho, but at the same time I raised my hands and said “YES, I knew Light would do it!” It was like watching an intense chess match between two grand-masters and every one of the moves would be a “Check” but in the end it was Light that got the “Chackmate”. GO Light!!!
